Developing Your Mission Statement   Back

One of the first things I have my new clients do is create a mission statement designed to help clarify their intentions in their business. A nice byproduct of this exercise is that they will pull out a phrase that they can use in their marketing pieces which truly reflects their individuality.

So without further hesitation- grab a pen and let’s begin! Set aside 30-60 minutes when you can devote your full attention to this exercise. Turn on some relaxing music, get comfortable and have fun with this!

Why are you in this business?

Who do you want to work with?

What services do you provide?

What do you identify as your unique qualities that you bring to this business?

What are your goals?

What is truly important to you when you working with clients?

List some words that express the passion you feel about your career.

Describe your desired future for your business.

How will you know that you are succeeding?

If we were meeting five years from today and you were looking back over the past, what has to happen during those years for you to feel really good about yourself, your life, and the fulfillment of your vision?

  1. When your questions are complete, take a separate piece of paper and start to pull together phrases that particularly meaningful to you. Experiment with different combinations until you feel a sense of excitement.
  2. Write your final phrase in large, bold print- read it out loud, making sure this statement reflects you authentically. This phrase can be put on your business cards, ads, whatever marketing materials you choose. One client came up with “Touching Lives, One Home at a Time”. That is just one example each one is as distinctive as the person creating it.
  3. Determine what action steps you need to implement based upon the answers to your questions. Write them down and put them into your schedule with completion dates if appropriate.

Hopefully you are feeling more enlightened and tuned into your inner motivation. Keep your answers handy and feel free to redo them if your answers no longer feel as if they reflect you.
